Therapeutic Laser Treatment

Laser therapy is a noninvasive treatment aid to reduce pain and inflammation as well as speed healing.  It is the newest technology used to enhance treatment plans and improve the quality of life for your pet.  After surgery, patients receiving laser therapy have less pain, faster recovery and fewer complications.  Therapeutic laser treatment is also beneficial to pets with arthritis, trauma or injury, wounds and certain skin conditions.  It does not replace other treatment options, but can be used in conjunction with other treatment modalities.

Most treatments take a matter of minutes and can be done during a regular office visit.  Depending on your pet’s treatment needs, we may ask for your pet to stay with us for the day.  There is no patient sedation required, and the experience is pleasant and comforting to your pet.  Most dogs and cats do not need to have their hair clipped.

For most conditions, we recommend a multi-visit treatment plan.  Although improvement is often seen after the first visit, most patients require several treatments (3-8) for greatest benefit.   A majority of patients exhibit increased comfort and mobility within 12-24 hours after a laser treatment.  Sometimes they will not experience significant improvement for a number of treatments.  Treatments vary in length, but most sites require 2-8 minutes.  Laser therapy treatments are cumulative in nature.  The length and frequency of treatments varies with your pet’s condition.  Acute conditions may be treated daily, particularly if the condition is very painful.  More chronic problems respond better when treatments are spread out over a specific time frame.  A sample treatment schedule is as follows:

  • Every other day for 1 week (3 total)
  • Twice the second week (2 total)
  • Once the third week (1 total)
  • Maintenance treatments as needed (usually monthly)

Our doctors will recommend a treatment plan specific to your pet’s condition.  We offer individual treatments as well as treatment packages.
